From Beaches to Coasts: towards an Integrated Protection of the Coasts – BeProCoasts (Project code: P2022WCTEW)
Funded by the Ministry of University and Research with European Union funds under the NextGenerationEU / PNRR program.
CUP : J53D23019050001
Project duration: 30 months (start date 30 November 2023)
OVERVIEW OF THE PROJECT
The research focuses on coastal areas, with specific regard to Italy. In terms of content, it aims to shift the focus from the structure of beaches, which is the subject of the debate currently taking place in political and judicial institutions, to coastlines, seen as a set of assets worthy of protection. In terms of methodology, it aims to move from a monodisciplinary analysis to a transdisciplinary one. This requires:
consideration of the contribution that various social sciences – law, geography, economics, spatial planning – can make in the context of transdisciplinary research;
consideration of the various ways in which public institutions – also viewed through the prism of comparative analysis – perform a series of functions in relation to the coast, namely the delimitation of spaces, their distribution between public authorities and private entities, and the preservation and enhancement of the coast (for instance, coastal zone management plans);
examination of how public authorities act and of the involvement of stakeholders, not only those with sectional interests, but also those representing collective interests (e.g. workers' associations) and widespread ones (e.g. environmental associations).
INFO
More than 20 researchers are involved in the project, divided into five disciplinary areas (administrative law, comparative private law, geography, economic statistics, political economy, urban planning and technology) and coming from five different Italian universities (Department of Political Science - Roma Tre University, University of Urbino Carlo Bo, Bocconi University, IUAV University of Venice, University of Cassino and Southern Lazio)
